Disturbances of balance and dizziness in older people

• Treatment with various forms of manual medicine, osteopathic medicine and extracorporeal shock waves

Older people not uncommonly suffer from disturbances of balance and dizziness, because nerves degenerate as part of the natural ageing process. If there are also functional disturbances of the spinal column, the result is vague dizziness or a disturbance of balance.

However, various forms of disturbances of balance and dizziness also affect younger people, without a cause being able to be found with conventional methods. In these patients they are mostly functional disturbances of the upper cervical column, which to some extent must be regarded as a particular organ of balance.

In all patients with dizziness, irrespective of the cause, the aim is to bring the functional disturbances of the cervical column muscles closer to normality. In addition, those nerves responsible for the balance reactions that still exist should be stimulated as far as possible. On the one hand this is achieved by manual medicine and Arlen’s Atlas therapy, on the other hand the supplementary use of extracorporeal shock waves has proved helpful. Extracorporeal shock waves stimulate nerves and promote the supply of blood.

At our clinic, disturbances of balance and dizziness are treated with manual medicine and extracorporeal shock waves, if necessary, in 3 to 6 sessions carried out over a period of 1 - 3 weeks.
